The Story Of The Note:
Dr Francisco Sanches I
Francisco Sanches was a Spanish born professor of medicine, philosophy and writer. He was the author of a number of treatises on both medicine and philosophy, and was best known as the sceptical philosopher who penned Quod Nihil Scitur (That Nothing is Known). In this original artwork painted on an original bank note, Dr Francisco Sanches is surrounded with Peruvian Lilies. Peruvian Lilies (Alstroemeria) represent friendship, love, strength and devotion. They also represent thought and mutual support as well as the ability to help each other through the trials and tribulations of life.
The Banco de Portugal issued Portuguese Escudo banknotes in 9 different denominations, including this 500 Portuguese Escudos banknote (Francisco Sanches). They are part of the demonetized Portuguese Escudo banknotes series. The Banco de Portugal started issuing these 500 Portuguese Escudo banknotes in 1979. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1987.
