The Story Of The Note:

Elizabeth of Aragon, more commonly known as Saint Elizabeth of Portugal was also Queen consort of Portugal and a tertiary of the Franciscan order and venerated saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

Elizabeth took an active interest in Portuguese politics and was a decisive conciliator during the negotiations concerning the Treaty of Alcañices between Spain and Portugal which decided the future for the borders of the two countries. In her later life Isabel retired to the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha in Coimbra and she joined the Third Order of St. Francis, devoting the rest of her life to the poor and sick in obscurity

In this original artwork painted on an original bank note, Saint Elizabeth of Portugal is celebrated with a nimbus of gold and surrounded by delicate and exotic orchids (Zygopetalum mackaii). Orchids are a symbol of love, rare beauty, strength, and wealth.

The Banco de Portugal issued Portuguese Escudo banknotes in 9 different denominations, including this 50 Portuguese Escudos banknote of Queen Elizabeth the Saint of Portugal. They are part of the demonetised Portuguese Escudo banknotes series. The Banco de Portugal started issuing these 50 Portuguese Escudo banknotes in 1964. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1968.
