Is there a cultural void in your life, perhaps right above the fireplace, or on the wall above the sofa? If you’re thinking about buying a piece of artwork, but you’re not sure where to start, never fear! Landmark Street Art Gallery is here, with this straight talking ten-step guide to buying street art.
1. Be inspired
Are you inspired by Tabby, seduced by the Connor Brothers or energised by Ben Eine? Wouldn’t you love to tame a little piece of that wild street art magic and take it home with you? Have you been to a gallery show and fell in love with a particular artist?
Nearly all our artists cut their teeth in the wild, and most of them still get out there and leave their mark. That same energy, wit, colour and passion that you see on the streets of Palestine (Ame72), Shoreditch (Ben Eine), Austria and Washington (Tabby) is harnessed onto canvas, board, tile, and can be shipped to a wall near you!
2. Buy with your heart
Art is personal. Great art produces an emotional connection. The piece you choose will be with you for a long time, so above all, choose something you love and that you’ll want to share with others.
People buy art for many different reasons, you may want it to make you smile, share a political message, mark a moment in time in your life or simply look gorgeous, but whatever your reason is, you’ll know when you’ve found the right piece. If you buy with your heart you won’t go far wrong.
3. Choose a reputable gallery
We would say that, wouldn’t we, but sadly counterfeiting and rip-offs are an evil reality in the art business. Don’t trust some random guy on eBay, just because he’s brandishing a certificate of authenticity. We see very high-quality fakes, both of works and certificates. Steer well clear.
Integrity is essential in our line of work. Trust a bricks and mortar gallery with links to the artists and a string of happy clients and you won’t regret it.
4. Build a relationship with your gallery
We buy what we love and we love what we do. It’s that simple. Why would we do it otherwise? And meeting people that share our passion for contemporary art, or those that are just discovering it, is just the best way to spend our day!
We like to speak to every single client by phone, before, during and after a sale. We have loyal clients all over the world that we’ve been lucky enough to build an incredible friendship with and personally visit and deliver work across the atlantic and beyond.
Building those relationships is so important, because it’s not just about selling, we can advise, educate and source. Go on, pick our brains! And if now isn’t the right time for you, no worries, but we may well know of something coming up that would be perfect for you.
Nothing makes us happier than knowing that a client has found a piece that is going to bring them joy for a long, long time. It’s a beautiful thing.
5. Consider your space
A room without art feels like it’s missing something. Buy with your heart, yes, but if you’re looking for a piece for a specific wall, then that introduces other factors to consider.
Is it the right fit for location? A good gallery will help you through this and either digitally place the artwork on your wall or, where possible, bring it round for you to see.
This Connor Brothers’ original could have been made for this kitchen.
A perfect example of the right piece in the right location, just gorgeous
Think about what else is going on in the room, but don’t get too hung up on the colours, styles and features already there. Particularly with street art, it’s designed to challenge the viewer. Get eclectic and mix it up a bit!
Alternatively, if you love it, just get it. Then redecorate or move house. You know you’re worth it!
6. Art is not a guaranteed investment
We choose to work with outrageously talented artists because we believe what they do is awesome, we want to support them and help get their work to a global audience. If they become as bankable as Banksy, then hell, yeah, bring it on, but there are no guarantees in this game, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either misguided or plain lying.
So many variables influence the value of artwork. Ultimately, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and even the popular artists can fall out of favour. Rolf Harris, anyone!
7. Set a budget
Sensible advice. But be prepared to go a little over it for the right piece. You may need to act fast or miss out. The pieces in our gallery are originals or limited editions, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Again, talk to the gallery owner (or ‘Ben’, as we like to call him). Explain what you’re looking for, tell him the kind of figure you’ve got in mind and you might be pleasantly surprised with what your options are.
Don’t assume that originals are out of your reach. Some limited-edition prints fetch a higher price, simply due to the nature of the piece, whereas you might be able to pick up a magical original like this Tabby for under £700
As always, choose with your heart, not your wallet. But don’t panic if you do need to stretch your budget, because we happen to have a neat little solution.
8. Own art scheme
We can offer you an interest-free loan to spread the cost of your purchase over ten months. No deposit and interest-free. Yep, as in zero per cent interest! Available for purchases of up to £2,500.
